Thursday Feature – A Beaded Story

13 Jun

Today I am getting to know Candace from A Beaded Story – an Etsy shop focused on creating inspirational poem bracelets for special gifts.  Candace offers peace and comfort with her beaded bracelets and has a wide variety tp choose from for all occasions.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and where the inspiration came from to start your Etsy shop.

I have been doing crafts for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories are of Mom and I at the kitchen table making shrinky dinks. I have dabbled in almost every craft out there over the years. Those times spent crafting with Mom are very dear to me and formed a special bond between us.

In 2012 without notice my place of employment shut down along with some other bumps in the road. I took these as signs to do something that would make me happy in life. In the past I had owned a ceramic business and mural business and really enjoyed creating for people. This time I wanted to do something different maybe online sales so not to have storefront costs.

il_570xN_423869162_h00oI had been doing the Life of Christ bracelets for a few years for friends and family and they seemed to enjoy them so much I thought I would expand on that. I searched or wrote poems for a few bracelets and started beading the words. In the mean time a friend suggested Etsy. I looked into the site and was impressed with the ease and low cost of starting. It was just what I was looking for so I signed right up! I did get cold feet and sat on the idea for a few months while still looking for a traditional job. At night I would make the bracelets to pass the time and once my craft table started overflowing with bracelets I knew it was time to take the plunge and get serious, and so A Beaded Story was born. In June of 2012 I opened my business and have never looked back. I enjoy the freedom it gives me and all the wonderful customers I get to work with. I now make 22 different poem bracelets in my line. You will find Family, Bridal, Cancer, Faith, Military and much more in my shop.

2. Do you have a favourite piece? Tell us about the thought process involved in creating it and why it is your favourite.il_570xN_444624865_ez34

My favorite piece is my memorial bracelet. It is to remind the wearer that their loved one is always near to them. I enjoy making them because I know each one is giving comfort to those with a broken heart of loss of a loved one. Losing my own mother not to long ago I know that pain.

3. What is it that makes your shop unique?

My poem bracelets are not only a beautiful piece of jewelry but each one holds special meaning. I take a poem, pick out the significant words and put it to color. Each bead has a meaning in relation to the poem which makes it a special present to give. Each bracelet comes with a poem that outlines the meaning of the beads.

4. What’s next in the pipeline?

I’m working on an Aunt and Grandmother one. I’m always open for suggestions on new bracelets. Many of my best sellers come from suggestions from customers.

5. Tell us something about you or your shop that you haven’t previously shared!

I really enjoy making custom orders for people. Over Christmas I had a customer contact me asking if I could use a special poem she wrote to her Sister in Law. She sent me a family heirloom cameo to be included in the design. I thought this was such a special gift for her Sister in Law and enjoyed making this bracelet for her.

6. And finally, let us know where we can find you.

Etsy Love – Winterwoman Designs

25 Feb

Next up in my Etsy Love series is Jean from Winterwoman Designs who creates beautiful and unique jewellery from recycled bicycle parts.  This is such a wonderful idea and I love the fact that Jean has taken bits of unwanted metal and turned them into original, wearable pieces of art!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and where the inspiration came from to start your Etsy shop.

I love to ride bicycles, both on the road and in the woods! I had been working a full time job doing custom window treatments, but my parents were needing more and more help. So, seeing as my kids are grown and my husband has a good job, I decided to stop working full time. I found a part-time job at a local bike shop and just started playing with the used bicycle spokes that were being thrown out, and one day I made a bracelet from one of the spokes . The bike shop owner loved it and said make more, we’ll sell them. They were selling so well at the shop I started looking around for other places to sell and a friend told me about Etsy.

2. Do you have a favourite piece? Tell us about the thought process involved in creating it and why it is your favourite.

My favorite design would have to be the spoke screw and bead bracelets. There were a lot of spoke screws (aka spoke nipples, they hold the spoke in the wheel rim) left over from all the spoke bracelets and they were sitting there looking all shiny, so I just started stringing them on a wire with beads thinking necklace, but then bracelet popped in my head. Why fave? It’s really pretty!

3. What is the biggest milestone you have achieved so far whilst selling on Etsy?

 Maybe selling 50 items?

4. What are your future plans for your shop and crafting in general?

I am developing biking related items that are not jewelry, but still make use of used bike parts. My goal is to get my items into more local shops and to sell at more craft fairs.

5. And finally let us know where we can find you.

Thanks for answering my questions Jean.  I really enjoyed looking at your unique designs, it reminded me that everything has the potential to become something new and exciting with a bit of imagination and creativity.  I wish you all the best in expanding your shop and hope your new items are just as successful as your jewellery.

Etsy Love – Carden Creations

23 Feb

Today in my Etsy Love series we are getting to know Sarah from Carden Creations – a delightful shop full of colourful jewellery, bridal bouquets and framed art by her husband, Robert.  Sarah and Robert’s shop has a vibrant energy to it, full of imagination and a love for crafting.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and where the inspiration came from to start your Etsy shop.

I am a wife and mother first. My husband and kids make any journey worthwhile…and interesting! And they continue to be every emotion I have everyday. When things are going good or bad, they are the ones I want to share it with. I work in the field of health and wellness and I love helping people achieve their goals. It is so inspirational to see people who have conquered illness and injury and committed to a more active lifestyle. It never ceases to amaze me.

I am also a student and working on my doctorate in Leadership Studies. It challenges me everyday and I love each new discovery I make and the wonderful people I have gotten to know as a result. I love history, psychology, exercising, and reading. But I have had so much fun making the items you see in my shop. It started with some old wire that my husband never used, some beads, and a rainy day in Texas…and I started making jewelry and didn’t stop. Recently, my husband started making the items in our shop section “Our Back Porch”. He loves to make framed art. He has turned into the talent and I am his manager! Suddenly we made so much stuff that we had to do something with it. I love Etsy and had shopped there forever, so it felt like a natural thing to start a shop and here we are!

 2. Do you have a favourite piece? Tell us about the thought process involved in creating it and why it is your favourite.

I would have to say that my favorite item in my shop is one of the beaded brooch bouquets. This in particular:I love making the jewelry, but the bouquets were something that stayed in my mind for a long time. The vintage brooches and repurposed jewelry had to be used so they could start another beautiful life. It sounds corny, I know, but I can’t help but to wonder where the pieces had been and hope they can be passed on to make people happy.Personally, there is another item that is my favorite:This is one of the pieces my husband made. I am amazed at how good he is at it and how much fun he has doing it. I told I am buying this one if no one else does…at a discount of course!

3. What is the biggest milestone you have achieved so far whilst selling on Etsy?

My biggest milestone had to be my first sale. I am sure that most Etsy sellers would say the same. And I am talking about the first sale that was not friends or family. While those are wonderful too, I was so excited when someone stumbled onto our store and loved what we had.

4. What are your future plans for your shop and crafting in general?

We hope to open another store with Robert’s (hubby) pieces of tile art. I think I have created a monster…one that is way more talented and intricate them me! This has been something we have enjoyed doing together as a team. And who knows, maybe we can quit our days jobs someday and just make the things we love to make!

5. And finally let us know where we can find you.

Thanks for sharing with us Sarah.  I hope your second shop is just as successful as your first.  I’m a little jealous that your husband shares your passion for crafting – I’ve tried to get my partner to knit with me but it’s just not going to happen!!

Etsy Love – Ang’s Divine Designs

18 Feb

Next up in my Etsy Love series is Angie from Ang’s Divine Designs who sells beautiful, affordable jewellery.  Angie’s shop is full of beaded delights at very reasonable prices and I think anyone would struggle not to find something to suit their taste!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and where the inspiration came from to start your Etsy shop.

I started making earrings several years ago when I found out that my daughter could not wear anything that was not nickel free. Any time metal is in contact with her skin, she’ll break out in a rash and itch. At the time she wanted to start wearing jewelry we couldn’t really find much she could wear; so I started making earrings for her with nickel free hooks. When I started making jewelry I knew I found my creative outlet! I loved it! I started showing people I worked with what I had made and started getting requests. I have enjoyed it ever since. My goal has always been to create affordable, attractive earrings/jewelry. I try to get the best deals on my materials so I can keep my prices low for you.

2. Do you have a favourite piece? Tell us about the thought process involved in creating it and why it is your favourite.

I don’t really have a favorite piece. I love creating jewelry, but I am my biggest critic too.

[Well I guess I will choose my own favourite for you! These seed bead bottle earrings are so unusual (and I just love rainbows!)]

3. What is the biggest milestone you have achieved so far whilst selling on Etsy?

I love and appreciate that I have had over 200 sales in less than 2 years and I am always excited when my creations go over seas!

4. What are your future plans for your shop and crafting in general?

I love to come up with new ideas and create new jewelry. I would love to get the word out more about my shop!

5. And finally let us know where we can find you.
