The Week Ahead – Silver Wire Earrings

21 Oct

I’ve been trying to source some good quality sterling silver ear wires at an affordable price for quite some time – some of the cheaper options can be incredibly flimsy.   That’s when it occurred to me – why don’t I just make my own?

SwarovskiSilverEarrings1Through a little bit of online browsing I’ve managed to source eco-silver wire.  This wire is made from recycled sterling silver and has all of the same properties as sterling silver.  The wire is pliable but much weightier than the ear wires I’ve used in the past.  I just love the more organic nature of these handmade ear wires and I think they’ll become a part of my future jewellery designs.SilverPearlEarrings1

It’s also been a while since I used my pegboard so I’ve used my new silver wire to create these swirling earring designs.

In the meantime I’m also knitting up another slouchy hat using my own pattern.  Once I get it the way I like it I’ll start to make a series of them in different fun colours.  What a great way to brighten up the apparent horrible winter that’s coming our way!2013-10-19 16.02.26

Giveaway! Tartan Cross Stitch Earrings

15 Jul

Avid followers of my blog and/or shop will know that I have started creating tartan cross stitch earrings.  These miniature pieces of art are created by cross stitching the tartan pattern and mounting it onto antique silver frames and matching earwires.

I want to expand my collection (I only have three tartans at the moment!) but I’m not sure what the most popular tartans would be.MacleodEarrings[1]

This is where you come in!

I am offering a free pair of custom tartan cross stitch earrings, stitched in your own family’s tartan.  What a unique prize (if I do say so myself!)

Here is what you need to do:

  • Click on the giveaway button below to be taken to the giveaway entry page.
  • Tell me what your family’s tartan is.  This may require a little research on your part and obviously not everyone will have a Scottish name.  However even if your own name isn’t Scottish, you may have Scottish ancestors so I am happy for you to enter a substitute name.  The point being I just want to find out what the most common tartans will be!
  • You can also submit additional entries by following the steps on the Rafflecopter website (e.g. follow my blog, like my Facebook page etc)

This giveaway will be open for entries for one week – ending at midnight (BST) on 21 July.  The winner will be announced on Monday 22 July and it will take me one week to create the custom tartan earrings.

MacdonaldEarrings[1]In the meantime you can find my current offering of Tartan Cross Stitch Earrings right here.  Remember you can use Coupon Code CIJUK10 for 10% off everything in my Etsy shop until the end of July.

Thanks in advance and good luck!

Thursday Feature – Finding Starlight

16 May

Today we are getting to know Sarah from Finding Starlight, an Etsy shop featuring a wonderful selection of handmade earrings and crocheted headbands.  I especially love Sarah’s headbands as they make a wonderful and versatile accessory!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and where the inspiration came from to start your Etsy shop.

I first started crafting as a young girl. My mother was the one who first put a crochet hook in my hand and who bought me my first beading kit. I was seven years old when my mom taught me how to crochet, and I fell in love with it right away. My first ever project was a scarf. My mother taught me how to create my own patterns. She always says, “Why use someone else’s pattern when you can make your own?” When I was nine, she bought me my first “grown-up” beading kit, and I suddenly had a new and wonderful hobby. I spent my time creating bracelets and earrings for everyone I knew. Ever since then, crafting has been a passion of mine.

Many years later, I’m now a poor college student who does this in my spare time to try to make some extra money for necessities. But first and foremost, I do this because I love it. I love having a way to express my creativity. When I first discovered Etsy, I was so excited because up until then I had just been making things for my loved ones. But to have an opportunity to share my passion with the world is truly thrilling.

2. Do you have a favourite piece? Tell us about the thought process involved in creating it and why it is your favourite.il_570xN_357120266_ojud

My favorite piece in my shop would have to be my “Something Blue Earrings.” When I look at them I instantly think of walking down a beach on a partly cloudy day (my favorite kind of day). It’s like I can almost feel the mist of the ocean on my skin and the wind blowing my hair in my face. When I was making them, the inspiration for them all started with the ear wires. I loved the seashells on them so much and I knew I had to make something with those. I’ve seriously considered on more than one occasion taking them down and keeping them for myself.

3. What is it that makes your shop unique?

I specialize in making quality handmade jewelry and accessories. But I also do my best to make them affordable as well. As I mentioned earlier, I’m a poor college student, so I understand wanting to be able to buy nice things for myself and as gifts, but not wanting to spend too much. So in addition to trying to keep my prices low, I frequently have coupons also.

I put my whole heart and soul into everything I make. And I never put something up for sale unless it’s something I would proudly wear myself. Also, in most of my listings, I put a quote in the description. And I do that because before I started selling on Etsy, I saw a listing once where someone did that. And it made me smile. And I started thinking that if I smiled from seeing that, then maybe other people do also. So when I opened my shop I started putting quotes in my descriptions as well. Because that’s who I am: I’m the girl who likes to make people smile.il_570xN_421396835_4toe

4. What’s next in the pipeline?

Hopefully this summer you’ll start to see some brand new products in my shop. I really want to expand my crochet line that I have. So hopefully soon you’ll start seeing some new headband designs, some scarves, and some crochet flower hair clips.

5. Tell us something about you or your shop that you haven’t previously shared!

I’m going to let you all in on a secret. I’m going to tell you the meaning behind my shop name: Finding Starlight. To me, stars represent something beautiful that seems so close – like if we just reach out a little bit further we could touch them – but when in fact they’re far away. So to me, stars are sort of a metaphor for life. We’re always searching for something. Whether it’s love, friendship, a new career; we’re always on a journey to some sort of end goal. And that’s what Finding Starlight is all about. It’s about that beautiful journey we’re all on to make our dreams our reality. It’s about finding the starlight.

6. And finally, let us know where we can find you.

You can find me on my Etsy shop page at www.FindingStarlight.etsy.com. Or on my Facebook page where you can be the first to hear about coupons, sales, and giveaways! www.facebook.com/FindingStarlightil_570xN_352283078_51xv

Sarah has also kindly offered The Candy Tree readers an exclusive 10% off coupon!  Simply use coupon code 10FORSPRING13 at checkout!

Thanks for sharing your shop with us, Sarah – I especially love your explanation of where your shop name came from!  Also, I’ve never been able to master crochet and I just adore your designs – I can’t wait to see your new products!

Share the Love

I took my Christmas tree down today and it’s left me feeling a little blue – so in order to pick myself up again I’ve decided to move on to the next event of the year (except my birthday of course!) – Valentine’s Day!  Apparently Valentine’s Day is hated by singletons everywhere, but I think it should be a fun day whether you are in a relationship or not.  If you’re single and looking for love, why not send out a Valentine’s Day card to that someone special or a cheeky pair of earrings to that girl you like?

I’ve been working on a range of adorable cross stitched goodies including these red satin heart earrings and cards.  Want to send your Valentine’s Day card anonymously?  Just give me the details of your desired message and recipient and I will take care of the rest!

Click on over to my shop to see my full range of gifts and Valentine’s Day goodies – and as a little thank you to my blog readers, you can use Coupon Code VALENTINE13 at checkout for 15% off your order!

Buttons, buttons, buttons!

25 Mar

I seem to have become slightly obsessed with buttons lately…  I love the huge variety of colour and size and they are so versatile!

Larger buttons are perfect for adding a finishing touch to patchwork cushions…

I use the medium sized ones to coordinate with cotton squares to create my fabric button rings…

And the teeny tiny ones can be grouped together to create button jewellery like these new cute button earrings!

I’m planning on making a whole series of these adorable earrings – there are just far too many colour combinations to create and they would be perfect for customising to coordinate with your favourite outfit.  If you want a pair in your favourite colours then just get in touch!

Etsy Love – Ang’s Divine Designs

18 Feb

Next up in my Etsy Love series is Angie from Ang’s Divine Designs who sells beautiful, affordable jewellery.  Angie’s shop is full of beaded delights at very reasonable prices and I think anyone would struggle not to find something to suit their taste!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and where the inspiration came from to start your Etsy shop.

I started making earrings several years ago when I found out that my daughter could not wear anything that was not nickel free. Any time metal is in contact with her skin, she’ll break out in a rash and itch. At the time she wanted to start wearing jewelry we couldn’t really find much she could wear; so I started making earrings for her with nickel free hooks. When I started making jewelry I knew I found my creative outlet! I loved it! I started showing people I worked with what I had made and started getting requests. I have enjoyed it ever since. My goal has always been to create affordable, attractive earrings/jewelry. I try to get the best deals on my materials so I can keep my prices low for you.

2. Do you have a favourite piece? Tell us about the thought process involved in creating it and why it is your favourite.

I don’t really have a favorite piece. I love creating jewelry, but I am my biggest critic too.

[Well I guess I will choose my own favourite for you! These seed bead bottle earrings are so unusual (and I just love rainbows!)]

3. What is the biggest milestone you have achieved so far whilst selling on Etsy?

I love and appreciate that I have had over 200 sales in less than 2 years and I am always excited when my creations go over seas!

4. What are your future plans for your shop and crafting in general?

I love to come up with new ideas and create new jewelry. I would love to get the word out more about my shop!

5. And finally let us know where we can find you.
