New Arrivals

11 Feb

I’ve not been very good at blogging regularly recently but I have been a busy bee!SilverStrandEarrings4

GoldHeartEarrings4I had great fun at the weekend trying out my new anvil and hammers and I love the results.  Wire can be instantly transformed from a simple piece of jewellery into something beautifully textured and unique.

A lot of my latest designs seem to feature hearts but I’m a bit late for Valentine’s Day, however hearts make a wonderful gift for the one you love anytime of the year!

I’ve also been working on a side project for a friend of mine.  This uber geeky/fantabulous cross stitch features a scene from Monkey Island and is going to be turned into a cushion as a house warming gift.

The thread I’m using for the sky has been hand dyed by The Rainbow Girl – I absolutely love using her threads for their amazing blend of colours!

Valentine’s Day is Coming!

It’s not long now until the most romantic day of the year is upon us.  Show how much you care with handmade jewellery or a cross stitched Valentine’s Day Card.

Etsy Love – Papertique

13 Jan

Today I am discovering Heather’s hand crafted paper goods and gift tag shop, Papertique.  Heather’s tags have a wonderful vintage feel with a modern twist – they are bold and beautiful!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and where the inspiration came from to start your Etsy shop.

As a longtime print designer and lover of all things paper, I found I was spending a bit too much time behind my computer, and missing the messy, color splattered life that a career in art promises us all when we are young!il_570xN.351824272

Nowadays, one of my favorite places to get out and set up shop, inky fingers and all, is a little bar in the East Village in NYC. Amidst the happy hours and birthday cheers, the soft pretzels smell like pancakes and there is always a well-deserved Prosecco sparkling at the bar for me once the sun sets so low that I can no longer tell my inkpad from my elbow. Now that’s more like it, right? 🙂

2. Do you have a favourite piece? Tell us about the thought process involved in creating it and why it is your favourite.

Possibly inspired by those celebratory surroundings I mentioned before, or just that special place in my heart for anything bubbly and sparkling, my Wine and Cheers Tag sets are a personal favorite. I love to use these to accent a hostess bottle for a dinner party, or maybe even a gift for myself!

*A close second is my new anatomically correct love tags, for when you just can’t find the words to express those squishy, fluttery, tingly feelings you have ♥

il_570xN.411208788_fogo3. What is it that makes your shop unique?

Papertique Gift Tags are created entirely using my original designs, inked and hand dyed to [im]perfection, and are 100% unique to this shop. No commercial rubber stamps here! I have also worked over time to perfect the layered inking and transfer techniques to give every piece my own unique, aged look and rustic texture and feel.

4. What’s next in the pipeline?

I am creating new designs every day, but absolutely adore the creative requests for winsome weddings, events and favors that my fabulous customers dream up! Focusing on more customized requests allows me to work even more closely with my clientry and see the charm that unfolds with my art in their hands.

5. Tell us something about you or your shop that you haven’t previously shared!

I was recently honored with the opportunity to create a huge set of customized favor tags for a certain country star’s exclusive release party thrown the night before he performed at the 46th annual CMA Awards!

6. And finally, let us know where we can find you.il_570xN.413047279_3i83

Share the Love

4 Jan

I took my Christmas tree down today and it’s left me feeling a little blue – so in order to pick myself up again I’ve decided to move on to the next event of the year (except my birthday of course!) – Valentine’s Day!  Apparently Valentine’s Day is hated by singletons everywhere, but I think it should be a fun day whether you are in a relationship or not.  If you’re single and looking for love, why not send out a Valentine’s Day card to that someone special or a cheeky pair of earrings to that girl you like?

I’ve been working on a range of adorable cross stitched goodies including these red satin heart earrings and cards.  Want to send your Valentine’s Day card anonymously?  Just give me the details of your desired message and recipient and I will take care of the rest!

Click on over to my shop to see my full range of gifts and Valentine’s Day goodies – and as a little thank you to my blog readers, you can use Coupon Code VALENTINE13 at checkout for 15% off your order!

My Cross Stitch Journey

31 Jan

After months of frantically knitting scarves for Christmas I have finally retired my knitting needles and refocused my energies on cross stitch!

Cross stitch has been a passion of mine since I tried my first DMC kit almost four years ago – it was an anemone (flower) which after months of stitching I framed and gave to my grandparents as an anniversary gift.

I soon realised that I had developed an appetite for cross stitch and would need to find another pattern to complete.  However, I needed a bigger challenge and decided to look at more complex designs.  This was when I started my next DMC pattern to create a cushion (pictured below).

A close up of my cross stitch flower cushion

This took me almost a year to complete and I was so proud (but also sad) that I had finally finished it!

This became another stepping stone for me because I then decided that I wanted to create my own patterns from scratch so that I could offer people something which was truly unique.  Having studied illustration at college, I had a portfolio full of potential pictures.  My main inspiration has always been nature and colour so it was easy to choose my first image – a vibrant watercolour painting of a Heliconia.

Heliconia Wall Hanging

I had never realised before how much time and effort went into creating a pattern from scratch before!  It’s not just a case of getting the software and loading up an image.  A pattern needs to flow together in sections of colour as opposed to individual crosses dotted all over the place (which would be very frustrating to stitch)!  You also have to think about how many different colours you want in your pattern.  More colours will create a more realistic image, however it will be more costly and time-consuming.

I love the vibrant colours of my Heliconia design, however the pattern doesn’t do the finished piece justice!  The pattern is available in my Etsy shop here and you can clearly see the difference when compared to the image above. Since finishing the Heliconia, I have created another pattern – this time of a tree, and am currently in the process of stitching it up.  Natural forms seem to lend themselves well to the medium of cross stitch – the unified crosses and flowing, natural lines contradict each other nicely.
My latest endeavours came about by trying to combine cross stitch with another hobby of mine – jewellery making.  Using tiny 28 count aida fabric I was able to create frame earrings holding minute designs.  My first pair of cross stitch earrings contain a cute and simple daisy pattern.

Cross Stitch Daisy Earrings

These earrings are perfect for customisation.  As long as the desired image is small and simple enough, there are endless possibilities to what could be stitched into these frames.  I’ve created two more designs with hearts for Valentine’s Day:

I’m currently looking at more ways that cross stitch can be applied to create interesting items and I’ve just finished stitching a QR code which only seems to work when scanned from a very specific angle, so I might have to work on that one!
I love a new project so if you would like to request a custom order (pattern or finished piece)  just get in touch – details are on the Contact Page.
